The Benefits of Standardizing on PypeServer Enterprise for Your Pipe Profilers

In a recent article on fabrication software standardization, Southland Industries highlighted a challenge that most large MEP contractors knows well: it can be a difficult to maintain uniform pipe fabrication workflows across multiple brands, models, and generations of pipe profilers across a network of fab shops. One of the standout takeaways was how dramatically pipe fabrication performance can shift depending on the tools used—and how PypeServer’s Enterprise pipe profiling software consistently solves problems that challenge pipe fabricators.

Southland’s experience reinforces that PypeServer Enterprise offers best-in-class importing, nesting, cutting, labeling, and status tracking while providing a uniform user experience no matter what brand, model or age of pipe profiler you have.

The API and Importing Advantage

An efficient pipe fabrication workflow starts with a smooth flow of data between the piping designers and the shop. Enterprise facilitates this with the broadest range of design tool API integrations available. Enterprise’s API integrations include PypeServer’s own free Cloud and premium Cloud+ services, Stratus, MSUITE Fab, Trimble Connect2Fab, BuildCentrix, and others. All of Enterprise’s API integrations are bi-directional (where supported) so cut status and other data are sent back in real time to keep track of job progress and productivity.

In addition to API integrations, Enterprise includes a broad range of file importers for PCF, PCD, PSVR, STEP, IFC, IGS, CSV, XLSX, PMP, XML, and other formats. Though file importing is a long-accepted workflow, it doesn’t allow for modern features like revision control, duplicate cut protection, fab sheet association, and status tracking.

To address this limitation, Enterprise includes free access to PypeServer’s library of Connect plug-ins for Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor, SDS2, and Tekla Structures, as well as our Cloudinator Windows application. Connect and the Cloudinator allow you to send your legacy file-based cut lists through the PypeServer Cloud to gain all the benefits of a digital workflow. Even better, all the Connect plug-ins, Cloudinator app, PypeServer’s basic Cloud service, file importers, and API integrations are included with Enterprise at no extra charge.

With all these importing tools at your disposal, PypeServer Enterprise accommodates any design tool, like Southland’s Revit-based workflow, or mixed workflows that utilize any combination of Revit, CAD, or spool design tools without a hitch.

Powerful Nesting and Precise Cutting

Getting cut data into your pipe cutting software is just the first step in an efficient workflow. Without good nesting algorithms and accurate cutting, you’ll be wasting pipe and spending a lot of labor time fitting up.

Enterprise’s nesting algorithms let you mix and match parts from multiple cut lists to make it easier to nest a full stick of pipe at once while advanced features to save material include the ability to nest into the machine’s “dead zone” as well as staggered lead-ins/outs and end-cut sharing between adjacent parts. If you don’t have enough parts to consume a whole stick, Enterprise will remember the length and end shapes of your remainders so you can easily nest onto them the next time. For high volume operations like Southland, Enterprise also has “one touch” batch processing that’ll let you nest days’ or even weeks’ worth of parts onto multiple pipes and queue them up for the machine operator to process.

When it comes to cutting accuracy, Enterprise is peerless. That’s in part because PypeServer’s spent over 15 years refining our cutting algorithms. In addition, Enterprise’s compatibility with every major brand of pipe profiling system on the market has allowed us to learn how to get the most out of every machine and cross-pollinate accuracy techniques from brand to brand. Finally, we understand that the real world is messy: pipes can be bent, “round” cross-sections can be egg-shaped, and pipe diameters and wall thicknesses have tolerances. When you’re making critical beveled cuts in large or thick pipe, Enterprise lets you specify the actual measured pipe diameter and wall thickness to get the most accurate cuts possible.

Graphical Drag-and-Drop Label Designer

Label printing is the Achilles’ heel for lots of fabrication software. Too often, you’re stuck either with expensive third-party labeling software or a limited set of built-in label designs that don’t include all the information you need. Even when the software allows for custom labels, you often have to become an expert at the ZPL printer language to produce a label that suits your needs. With PypeServer’s software, all of that goes away and is replaced by a simple, graphical, what-you-see-is-what-you-get label editor.

To use PypeServer’s graphical label designer, you just drag text, QR codes, bar codes, and graphics from the palette onto the label canvas, resize and reposition them with your mouse, and save the template. That’s it.

Enterprise includes separate templates for part labels, drop labels, end labels, and other label types.
