PypeServer Software and NUM Controls Power the New Lone Star Cutting Solutions Magnum Pipe Profiler
NUM AG and Lone Star Cutting Solutions have announced their latest collaboration highlighting the enhanced capabilities of the Lone Star Magnum pipe cutting machine. The announcement celebrates a powerful three-way collaboration among NUM, Lone Star, and PypeServer that brings unmatched precision, automation, and workflow efficiency to industrial pipe cutting operations.
Bringing Smart Software to Powerful Hardware
Lone Star Cutting Solutions, based in Texas, is known for building rugged and high-performance cutting machines for industries ranging from construction to oil and gas. Their flagship Magnum pipe cutting machine is a six-axis powerhouse built to handle the most demanding fabrication environments.
Now, thanks to the integration of NUM’s advanced CNC control systems and PypeServer’s pipe profiling software, the Magnum is even more capable, intuitive, and productive.
Where NUM + Lone Star + PypeServer Meet
NUM’s CNC technology brings serious horsepower to the Magnum’s motion control. From its real-time EtherCAT communication with plasma power modules to RTCP (Rotation Tool Center Point) functionality and height control for precision beveling, NUM makes every cut smarter and more efficient.
PypeServer complements this workflow by enabling operators to import pipe designs from Revit, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Tekla, SDS2, and other platforms—or even create them directly in a built-in part designer. Once parts are designed, a powerful nesting algorithm optimizes each piece of stock for material savings and a project tracking and field app tracks parts from cut to install. When integrated with NUM’s Flexium 3D simulation software, the full system creates a seamless end-to-end workflow for fabricators.
Ainsworth Inc. Puts It All to the Test
One of the first customers to implement this integrated solution was Ainsworth Inc., a major player in mechanical and pipe fabrication. They brought the Lone Star Magnum with NUM controls and PypeServer software online in early 2025.
Even without previous CNC programming experience, Ainsworth’s team quickly made the system a core part of their operations. “With PypeServer, we’re able to easily create designs and send NC programs to the NUM controller,” said Steve Whitehaus, Fab Shop Manager. “Our CAD department sends drawings directly to the PypeServer computer, which cuts our programming time significantly.”
Ainsworth currently uses the Magnum to cut carbon steel pipe from 3” Schedule 40 to 8” Schedule 80, handling both straight cuts and bevels up to 37.5°. They plan to expand into stainless steel soon. The auto-nesting feature in PypeServer helps them minimize waste, while NUM’s high-precision controls ensure perfect cuts every time.
Whitehaus added, “The speed and accuracy of the system is a huge time saver for our workflow. The Lone Star Magnum, PypeServer, and NUM controls work well with each other. All three companies are very responsive in resolving issues.”
Leading the Way in Fabrication Automation
This three-way partnership shows exactly what’s possible when innovative technology companies collaborate to improve real-world workflows. Whether you’re a seasoned CNC programmer or just entering the world of automated fabrication, the integration between NUM’s controls, Lone Star’s machinery, and PypeServer’s software makes advanced pipe cutting more accessible, accurate, and efficient.
