CASE STUDY
Q&A Interview: Tyler Petersen, Vice President of Manufacturing at Bassett Mechanical
Optimize information flow from design software to cutting equipment.
Bassett Mechanical is a full-service contractor providing complete design, fabrication, installation and preventative maintenance service solutions for industrial refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, controls, metal fabrication, and service needs. The company works across various industries such as Food & Beverage, Cold Storage, Industrial Manufacturing and Healthcare. We sat down with Tyler Petersen, Vice president of Manufacturing, to learn more about how PypeServer has helped refine their fabrication workflow.
What’s your role at Bassett and what’s your background?
As the Vice President of Manufacturing at Bassett Mechanical, I’m here to help our teams deliver great results for our customers. I’m responsible for our VDC, Fabrication, and Operational Support teams. My focus is on our internal and external customers, making sure we’re always meeting their needs and finding ways to improve what we do. I’m passionate about using technology to make our processes better and cutting out anything that doesn’t add value. I’m constantly looking for ways to get things done more efficiently.
What’s your typical workflow like and what software tools do you use, from design through production?
We create all our Piping, Plumbing and HVAC designs in Revit and create fabrication packages using MSUITE BIM. Once the fabrication packages are created the pipe spool drawings are pushed to MSUITE Fab and the pre-set conditions we have built into our workflows determine what parts will be routed to PypeServer Enterprise on our HGG 900RB and what parts will be routed to PypeServer Lyte for the Kentucky Gauge backstop on our Marvel Saw. PypeServer allows us to seamlessly send cut parts directly from the model to the cutting equipment without having to manually program the machines or create cut lists.
What made you consider PypeServer in the first place?
The interface and usability are what attracted us to PypeServer. The interface between our design software, fabrication software and equipment and the fact that it is simple to use made it a very easy decision to make.
How was the PypeServer installation process, what was the learning curve like, and how well does it work with your HGG machine?
The installation process was very easy, our learning curve was steep –this was due to being one of the first to utilize PypeServer with an older SPC1000 HGG Machine and the first on a Kentucky Gauge, this came with some unexpected challenges related to upgrading the PC on the older HGG. With Kelly Dillon and Ricky Bell’s direct help, we were able to get everything working as promised and we have been processing parts without an issue for well over a year.
How has your workflow changed with PypeServer, and have you seen any savings in time, labor, or materials with PypeServer?
PypeServer provides us with a lot of flexibility since we use and receive files from multiple different design programs to support the variety of work we do. Having the flexibility to process cut parts from a wide variety of design programs for us is key. Regardless of the design program, our operators are still receiving nested files on one platform in the shop. Eliminating the manual programming step is crucial, this not only saves on direct labor costs but also eliminates human error.
Do you consider PypeServer a good value?
We would not be able to run as efficiently without having PypeServer as part of our design-fabrication workflow, it’s a critical piece to optimizing our process. PypeServer’s integration with the design software on the front end and integrating with the fabrication software and the cutting equipment on the backend eliminates multiple manual steps throughout the entire process.
Do you have anything else you’d like to say?Â
PypeServer is a very responsive and innovative company. We appreciate PypeServer’s willingness to take on new challenges and solve new complex problems for us. Â Optimizing information flow from design to the cutting equipment is just as, if not more important, than optimizing the physical flow of materials through the shop and PypeServer makes that possible for us.
